Sensitive skin can be a real challenge to deal with when it comes to skincare. It can be difficult to find products that don’t cause irritation, redness, or inflammation.

In this article, we will explore:

  • What Is Sensitive Skin?
  • Causes And Characteristics Of Sensitive Skin
  • What Are The Best Natural Ingredients For Sensitive Skin? (including 9 recommendations to get you started)
  • Simple Skincare Solutions For Sensitive Skin
  • How To Formulate Your Own Natural Skincare Products For Sensitive Skin

This article is part of a series of articles about the skin, and if you haven’t done so already, it would be a good idea to check them all out.

You can develop a good understanding of how skin works in this article, and of why good skin anatomy and physiology is important when it comes to formulating your own natural skincare products here. You’ll want to learn about dry skin here, oily and acne prone skin here and aging and mature skin here.

What Is Sensitive Skin?

Sensitive skin is a condition that affects millions of people around the world. It is characterized by a heightened sensitivity to products, environmental factors, and physical stimuli. People with sensitive skin may experience itching, stinging, burning, or redness when exposed to certain ingredients or environmental factors. Sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, and lifestyle choices.

When diagnosing sensitive skin, dermatologists look for: skin reactions such as pustules, skin bumps or skin erosion, very dry skin, and (in lighter skin tones) a tendency toward blushing and skin flushing.

However it can be complicated to diagnose because sensitive skin may not be that severe and it may present itself as youthful, delicate looking or baby-like in appearance. It’s important to know this so we don’t jump to conclusions too quickly.

Additionally, when it comes to formulating products for more sensitive skin types, it’s important to understand that many people feel that certain household or skincare ingredients may cause sensitivity upon contact with the skin, causing inflammation, stinging, burning, dryness and discomfort. So, we have to be very careful and considered in our ingredient selection process.

Having a good understanding of the causes and characteristics of different skin types will enable you to formulate better products, whilst at the same time taking your knowledge and skill to an advanced level.

Causes And Characteristics Of Sensitive Skin

It is also tricky to identify the causes of sensitive skin because they are largely unknown, however below we list several potential causes of sensitive skin reactions:

Overly dry, dehydrated or injured skin:

This can lead to skin rashes and reactions.

Weak lipid barrier:

This occurs due to many different reasons (e.g. the wrong skincare routine and products, hormonal changes, nutrient deficiencies), the protective lipid barrier on the skin can be damaged and thus leave the skin more exposed to environmental factors.

Excessive exposure to environmental factors that cause skin damage:

Such as sun, wind and excessive heat or cold.

Allergic skin reactions:

Results from recurring exposure to an irritant or allergen that may result in an overactive response by the body’s immune system, often presenting itself as eczema, rosacea, or allergic contact dermatitis.

Overuse of detergents:

Avoid the temptation to over-wash, as it will strip the natural oils, fats and nutrients, which protect and keep the skin hydrated, balanced and healthy.

Poor diet or lifestyle choices:

For example, not consuming enough water, poor nutrition choices, poor personal hygiene, excessive stress or insomnia/lack of regular sleep, could all contribute to sensitive skin or eczema outbreaks.

Genetic factors:

This may also play a role in skin sensitivity and eczema; however further research is required on this subject.

Hormonal changes:

Hormonal fluctuations can cause changes in the skin’s sensitivity.

The Benefits of Using Natural Skincare Products For Sensitive Skin: Why You Should Switch to Non-Toxic Beauty Skincare Formulation

The typical characteristics of sensitive skin can vary and can also be tricky to identify but they include:

Tightness and dryness

Sensitive skin often lacks moisture and can feel tight or dry, especially after using certain skincare products or exposure to certain environmental factors.

Redness and irritation

Sensitive skin may become red and inflamed due to irritants or allergens in skincare products, as well as exposure to environmental triggers such as pollution, wind, or cold weather.

Itching and flaking

Sensitive skin may also experience itching and flaking due to dryness and irritation, and may be exacerbated by harsh ingredients or fragrances in skincare products.

Rashes and bumps

Sensitive skin may develop rashes, hives, or bumps in response to certain ingredients or environmental factors. These may be localized to certain areas of the body, or may occur more widely.

Sun sensitivity

People with sensitive skin may be more prone to sunburn and other adverse reactions to sun exposure, as their skin may be more vulnerable to UV damage. It’s important for people with sensitive skin to use sun protection and seek shade during peak sun hours to avoid further damage.

What Are The Best Natural Ingredients For Sensitive Skin?

Natural ingredients can be incredibly beneficial for sensitive skin, as they are often gentler and less likely to cause irritation. Here are nine natural ingredients that are great for combatting sensitive skin:

  1. Aloe vera

This plant has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that can help calm and hydrate sensitive skin. We wrote an article all about Aloe Vera that you might find interesting. Take a look at it here.

  1. Chamomile essential oil

Chamomile has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that can help soothe and heal sensitive skin.

  1. Cucumber extract

Cucumber has a cooling effect that can help reduce redness and inflammation in sensitive skin.

  1. Calendula

Calendula has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe and heal sensitive non-irritating.

The Benefits of Using Natural Skincare Products For Sensitive Skin: Why You Should Switch to Non-Toxic Beauty Skincare Formulation
  1. Co-enzyme Q10

It has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help protect and soothe the skin. CoQ10 is naturally produced in the body and plays a key role in cellular energy production, but its levels can decline with age and exposure to environmental stressors.

  1. Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is a lightweight, non-greasy oil that closely resembles the sebum (natural oils) produced by our skin. It’s rich in vitamins and antioxidants, and is easily absorbed by the skin, making it a great option for sensitive skin. Take a look at our article, Jojoba in Natural Skincare and Haircare: Properties, Functions, and Benefits for more information.

  1. Rosehip oil

Rosehip oil is a nourishing oil that’s high in vitamins A and C, as well as fatty acids. It’s known for its regenerative and healing properties, and can help soothe and calm sensitive skin. Have a look at our article, 9 Natural Benefits of Rosehip Oil for Your Skin, to learn more about rosehip.

  1. Evening primrose oil

Evening primrose oil is a nourishing oil that’s high in gamma-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid that can help reduce inflammation and soothe sensitive skin.

  1. Glycerin

Glycerin is generally considered safe and beneficial for sensitive skin. It’s a natural humectant, meaning it helps attract and retain moisture in the skin, which can be helpful for those with dry or sensitive skin. Glycerin is a gentle ingredient that can help hydrate and soothe the skin, without causing irritation or breakouts. It’s also non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog pores or contribute to acne.

Remember to always research your ingredients first and check for any contraindications that might mean they are not suitable for you to use. Also, always patch test new ingredients and products and to consult with a skincare professional if you have any concerns or questions about your skincare routine.

Simple Skincare Solutions For Sensitive Skin

Here are some skincare solutions that can be helpful for sensitive skin:

Keep it simple

Stick to a simple, gentle skincare routine with just a few basic products. Avoid using too many products with fragrances, dyes, or other potential irritants.

Patch test new products

Before using a new skincare product all over your face, patch test it on a small area of your skin first. This can help you avoid any potential allergic reactions or irritations.

Use lukewarm water

Avoid using hot water when washing your face or showering, as it can be drying and irritating to sensitive skin. Instead, use lukewarm water to help protect your skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Use a face mask

Using a face mask can help to soothe and hydrate sensitive skin. Look for masks that contain natural ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, or oatmeal.

The Benefits of Using Natural Skincare Products For Sensitive Skin: Why You Should Switch to Non-Toxic Beauty Skincare Formulation

Use a gentle cleanser:

Cleansing helps remove dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin, which can contribute to breakouts, irritation, and other skin issues. However, it’s important to choose a gentle, non-irritating cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils or disrupt its pH balance.

Look for cleansers that are fragrance-free, soap-free, and formulated with mild, non-drying ingredients. You might want to avoid foaming cleansers and you could even start off with Micellar water to see how it works.

There are a couple of articles about cleansers on our website that you might find helpful. Take a look at Formulating Your Own Cleansers: A Detailed Guide to Effective, Safe, and Sustainable Cleansers For All Skin Types and The Different Types of Natural (non-foaming) Cleansers You Can Formulate

Moisturize regularly

Moisturizing is key for sensitive skin. Look for fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizers that are formulated specifically for sensitive skin.

Wear sunscreen

Protecting your skin from the sun is important for everyone, but especially for those with sensitive skin. Look for a broad-spectrum, mineral-based sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Look for sunscreens that are labeled “broad-spectrum” and contain natural ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Avoid potential triggers

If you know that certain ingredients or products, foods, environmental factors, or other triggers can irritate your skin, try to avoid them as much as possible.

Consult with a dermatologist

If you’re struggling with sensitive skin, a dermatologist or skincare professional can help you develop a customized skincare routine that’s tailored to your specific needs.

Avoid hot water

Hot water can be harsh on sensitive skin, so it’s important to avoid using hot water when washing your face or showering. Use lukewarm water instead.

Remember that everyone’s skin is different, so it’s important to listen to your body and pay attention to how your skin reacts to different products and treatments. With the right skincare routine and a little bit of patience, you can help keep your sensitive skin looking and feeling healthy and beautiful.

Oily and acne-prone skin can be frustrating and challenging to deal with. However, with the right skincare routine and products, you can manage and control your skin’s oil production and reduce the likelihood of breakouts.

In this article, we’ll cover some essential skincare tips and recommendations for those with oily and acne-prone skin, as well as some natural ingredients and DIY solutions.

We look at the following:

  • What is oily skin?
  • Causes and Characteristics of Oily and Acne-Prone Skin
  • 11 Natural Ingredients to Combat Oily and Acne-Prone Skin
  • 8 Skincare Solutions for Oily Skin

Whilst this article focuses on oily skin, we’ve written a series of articles about the skin that you might want to take a look at after reading this one.

Understanding How Your Skin Works can be found here. Learning skin anatomy & physiology: the key to formulating for different skin types is here

In addition to those two, you’ll find an article about dry skin here, an article about aging or mature skin here, and also an article about sensitive skin here.

What is oily skin?

Skin that is defined as oily/acne-prone is described as being shiny, oily, or slick looking, often accompanied by large, darkened pores and acne blemishes. It occurs when the skin produces more oil (sebum) than is required for the skin to be in optimum condition.  The skin can become congested and the pores more pronounced/easily noticeable. The T-zone may be particularly impacted – forehead, nose, chin and sometimes the cheek area directly below the eyes.

Acne is defined as “a chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous units, producing comedones, papules, pustules, cysts and scars”. Beyond the face, acne may affect the neck, chest, back or upper arm area.

Causes and Characteristics of Oily and Acne-Prone Skin

Oily skin occurs when your skin produces too much sebum, a natural oil that helps lubricate and protect your skin. When your skin produces too much sebum, it can clog your pores and cause breakouts.

Acne-prone skin is characterized by the presence of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormones, stress, diet, and genetics.

Factors which typically contribute to acne are: oil production, dead skin cells, clogged pores and bacteria, but we’ve included a more exhaustive list below of several possible causes and aggravators of oily and acne-prone skin:

Overproduction of sebum:

This is often due to hormonal levels and activity.

Lack of moisture in the skin

Although it may sound counterintuitive, if the skin is lacking moisture it can respond with an excess production of sebum. Oily skin can be dehydrated; this is why moisturizing ingredients with humectants can help to balance sebum production in some cases.

Lack of exfoliation

In some people, skin cells accumulate and contribute to clogged pores causing acne breakouts. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells to reveal new, younger cells underneath, and helps to remove impurities and debris that may be clogging skin cells. (It is important not to over-exfoliate skin, which may aggravate and inflame the skin, leading to further acne breakouts.)

Overuse of harsh detergents:

Avoid the temptation to over-wash oily or acne affected skin, as it will strip the much-needed natural oils which protect and keep the skin hydrated, balanced and healthy.

Overuse of comedogenic cosmetics:

Such as foundation or concealer, which may clog the skin resulting in acne.

Poor diet or lifestyle choices:

Not consuming enough water, poor nutrition choices, poor personal hygiene, excessive stress or lack of regular sleep/insomnia, could all contribute to acne blemishes.

Hot, humid climates:

This may contribute to acne and clogged pores from increased perspiration and sebum production.

What are the best natural ingredients for oily and acne-prone skin?

You’ll be pleased to know that there are many natural ingredients that can help balance oil production and reduce the appearance of blemishes. Often the challenge formulators have is choosing which ones to use, but that is part of the science, art and practice of natural skincare formulation.

Students of our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation learn to deliberately select the right ingredients for the right sort of products, that are tailored to suit specific skin types, needs and preferences. And when they select their ingredient they follow a tried and tested product design process that helps them to come out with the right result that also conforms to their values.

You can find out more about this in a couple of articles we wrote on that very subject: The Complete Guide to Natural Skincare Ingredients and Raw Materials and The Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation: A Complete and Comprehensive Curriculum.

In general you should try to look for ingredients that have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties. Some of the best natural ingredients for oily and acne-prone skin include tea tree oil, witch hazel, aloe vera, green tea, and jojoba oil. We’ll look at these and a few more next 🙂.

11 Natural Ingredients to Combat Oily and Acne-Prone Skin

Tea tree essential oil

Tea tree oil is beneficial for oily skin because it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce acne breakouts and soothe irritated skin. Tea tree oil can also help to regulate oil production by removing excess oil and impurities from the skin.

It works by penetrating deep into the pores and dissolving the buildup of oil and dead skin cells, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Additionally, tea tree oil has a drying effect on the skin, which can help to reduce the appearance of oiliness.

Witch hazel

Witch hazel is a beneficial ingredient for oily skin because it has astringent properties that help to remove excess oil and impurities from the skin, tighten the pores, and reduce the appearance of oiliness. It works by constricting the blood vessels and tissues, which can help to reduce inflammation and redness associated with acne breakouts.

Additionally, witch hazel has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe and calm irritated or inflamed skin, making it a great option for those with oily, acne-prone skin. However, it’s important to choose a witch hazel product that is alcohol-free, as alcohol can be drying and irritating to the skin, especially if it is already oily or sensitive.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is beneficial for oily skin because it has astringent properties that help to tighten and tone the skin, without stripping it of its natural moisture. Aloe vera also has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe and calm irritated or inflamed skin, making it a great option for those with oily, acne-prone skin. It’s also a humectant that attracts water to the skin helping to keep it hydrated and balance sebum production.

Finally, aloe vera contains antioxidants that can protect the skin from environmental damage, and it can help to hydrate and soften the skin without clogging pores.

Read more about Aloe Vera in Natural Skincare in our article, The Power of Aloe Vera in Skincare: The Multi-Purpose Ingredient Transforming Skincare Products.

Green tea

Green tea is beneficial for oily skin because it contains antioxidants called catechins that have anti-inflammatory and sebum-regulating properties. The catechins in green tea can help to reduce oiliness by regulating the production of sebum, which is the natural oil produced by the skin. This can help to prevent clogged pores and acne breakouts.

In addition to that, the anti-inflammatory properties of green tea can help to soothe and calm irritated skin, while also reducing redness and inflammation associated with acne breakouts. Green tea also has astringent properties that can help to tighten and minimize the appearance of pores, making it a great option for those with oily, acne-prone skin.

How to Achieve Healthy, Glowing Skin: Skincare Tips for Oily and Acne-Prone Skin Skincare Formulation

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is a beneficial ingredient for oily skin because it closely resembles the natural sebum produced by the skin, which can help to regulate oil production and prevent excessive oiliness. By applying jojoba oil to the skin, it can help to trick the skin into thinking it has produced enough sebum, leading to a reduction in oiliness.

Additionally, jojoba oil has a non-greasy texture and is easily absorbed by the skin, making it a lightweight and non-comedogenic option for oily skin. Jojoba oil also has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe and calm the skin, making it a great option for those with oily, acne-prone skin.

Take a look at our article, Jojoba in Natural Skincare and Haircare: Properties, Functions, and Benefits for more information.

Rosehip oil

Rosehip oil can be beneficial for oily skin because it is a lightweight, fast-absorbing oil that does not leave a heavy or greasy residue on the skin. It is also high in linoleic acid, which can help to regulate sebum production and reduce excess oiliness.

What’s more, rosehip oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe and calm the skin, making it a good option for those with oily, acne-prone skin.

Read our article, 9 Natural Benefits of Rosehip Oil for Your Skin for more information.

Chamomile essential oil

Chamomile essential oil is beneficial for oily skin because it has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that can help to reduce inflammation and irritation, while also preventing bacterial growth that can lead to acne breakouts. Chamomile oil can also help to balance oil production by regulating the sebum levels in the skin. This can help to prevent clogged pores and reduce excess oiliness.

Chamomile oil has a calming effect on the skin, which can help to reduce stress-induced breakouts. Chamomile oil also has a hydrating effect on the skin, which can help to prevent dryness and soothe the skin.

Lavender oil essential oil

Lavender essential oil is beneficial for oily skin because it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce acne breakouts and soothe irritated skin. Lavender oil can also help to balance oil production by regulating the sebum levels in the skin. This can help to prevent clogged pores and reduce excess oiliness.

Additionally, lavender oil has a calming effect on the skin, which can help to reduce stress-induced breakouts. Lavender oil also has a soothing and hydrating effect on the skin, which can help to prevent dryness and irritation.

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica)

Madecassoside, centella asiatica’s active ingredient, has been shown to reduce skin inflammation caused by high levels of acne-causing bacteria. Inflammation can disrupt the skin barrier making skin even more susceptible to further acne, redness, inflammation and dehydration.

Reducing the inflammation caused by acne can break this cycle, strengthening the barrier and reducing acne and its associated symptoms such as inflammation, irritation and redness. It’s one of the main gotu kola benefits for skin, but it’s not the only one!

Find out more in our article, The Benefits of Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola) for Skin.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin because it exfoliates deep within the pores to unclog them and prevent breakouts, while also reducing oil production and promoting a clearer, smoother complexion.

PHAs

PHAs, or polyhydroxy acids, are a type of chemical exfoliant that are beneficial for the skin because they gently remove dead skin cells without disrupting the skin’s natural moisture barrier. PHAs also have humectant properties, meaning they attract and retain moisture, helping to hydrate and plump the skin.

Additionally, PHAs have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, making them suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin.

To find out more about PHAs, read our article, Formulating with Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs) in Natural Skincare.

Remember to always research your ingredients first and check for any contraindications that might mean they are not suitable for you to use. Also, always patch test new ingredients and products and consult with a skincare professional if you have any concerns or questions about your skincare routine.

Dry skin is a common skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide and is described as flaky, scaling, or dull-looking skin that may crinkle when pushed or depressed with a finger. It occurs when the skin loses its natural oils and moisture, leaving it feeling tight, rough, and flaky. In this article, we will explore the main causes and characteristics of dry skin, and provide tips on how to alleviate and combat this condition.

We’re going to focus on dry skin in this article, but if you’re interested in learning about other skin types, we’ve written a series of articles you’ll want to take a look at. You can read about oily and acne prone skin here, aging and mature skin here and sensitive skin here.

Causes and Characteristics of Dry Skin

Dry skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, aging, climate, and lifestyle choices. Individuals with a family history of dry skin are more likely to experience this condition themselves. As we age, our skin produces less oil, leading to increased dryness. Cold, dry climates can also exacerbate dry skin, as can hot water, harsh soaps, and other environmental irritants.

There are several causes which contribute to dry, dehydrated skin. It may be one core cause, or a combination of any of the following:

Lower sebum production

Sebum is the natural oil produced by the skin to help lubricate and protect it. When the skin produces less sebum than it needs, it can become dry, flaky, and itchy.

Aging skin

As we age, our skin produces less oil and becomes thinner and more fragile. This can lead to dryness, as well as other signs of aging such as wrinkles and age spots.

Dehydration or lifestyle choices

Lifestyle factors such as diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, and lack of hydration can all contribute to dry skin by depleting the body’s natural moisture levels.

Damage or removal of lipid layer from skin

The skin’s natural lipid barrier helps to protect it from environmental stressors and retain moisture. Damage or removal of this layer, such as from harsh soaps or over-exfoliation, can lead to dryness and sensitivity.

Formulating Natural Skincare Products For Dry Skin: Causes, Characteristics & Our Top Recommendations Skincare Formulation

Overexposure to elements or drying conditions

Exposure to dry or windy conditions, air conditioning or heating, and hot water can all strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to dryness and irritation.

The primary symptoms and characteristics of dry skin include:

  • Tightness and discomfort, especially after showering or bathing
  • Irritation, itching, soreness, redness, and flaking
  • Inflammation and/or cracked skin
  • Feeling of tightness after coming in contact with water
  • Rough or scaly patches of skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes and mouth
  • Dullness and lack of radiance

Knowing about the skin can help to make better products and transform the look and feel of our skin. The better your skin anatomy & physiology, the more aware you become about certain traits and characteristics of particular skin types, the easier it is to deliberately select the right ingredients for your natural skincare products. Fortunately, when you formulate your own natural skincare products, this is central to what you will do and means you’re empowered to make the right decisions about what you use on your skin.

To find out more about the structure and function of the skin, how the skin works and how natural skincare can help protect your skin, you’ll want to check out these two articles, Understanding How Your Skin Works and Learning skin anatomy & physiology: the key to formulating for different skin types.

Formulating Natural Skincare Products For Dry Skin: Causes, Characteristics & Our Top Recommendations Skincare Formulation

10 Natural Ingredients to Combat Dry Skin

When formulating natural & organic skincare products for dry skin you’ll want to look for ingredients that are known to soothe, moisturize and hydrate the skin.

Here are 10 recommendations:

  1. Aloe vera:

This plant extract is known for its soothing and hydrating properties, making it an excellent choice for dry, irritated skin.

See our article, The Power of Aloe Vera in Skincare: The Multi-Purpose Ingredient Transforming Skincare Products for more information.

  1. Avocado oil:

Avocado oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamins A, D, and E, making it an excellent choice for nourishing and hydrating dry skin.

  1. Hemp seed oil

This is an oil rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, making it an effective ingredient for dry skin as it helps to hydrate and soothe the skin while reducing inflammation and improving its overall health and appearance.

  1. Shea butter:

Shea butter is a popular ingredient in skincare products for dry skin, as it is rich in fatty acids and vitamins that help to moisturize and soothe the skin.

You can take a look at our article, Unlocking the Benefits of Shea Butter for Natural Skincare: From Women’s Gold to Skincare Essential to find out more about Shea Butter.

  1. Waxes

Jojoba wax and beeswax are natural occlusives that help to build the barrier repair function and protect the skin. They help to lock moisture in and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL). This helps to keep the skin hydrated and promote skin that is soft and smooth.

See our article about Beeswax (and vegan alternatives) here.

  1. Ceramides

Ceramides are a type of lipid found in skin cells that help to form the skin’s natural barrier, preventing moisture loss and protecting against environmental irritants.

  1. Phytosterols:

Phytosterols are found in unrefined plant oils. When applied topically, phytosterols can soothe and moisturize skin. Soy phytosterols in particular can help replenish and restore aging skin, keeping it pliant and supple.

  1. Glycerin:

Glycerin is a humectant that helps to attract and retain moisture in the skin, leaving it feeling soft and supple.

  1. Panthenol

Also known as Pro-Vitamin B5, is a powerful humectant that helps to hydrate and soothe dry skin by improving its ability to retain moisture and reducing inflammation.

  1. Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that helps to attract and retain moisture in the skin, making it an effective ingredient for hydrating dry skin.

To find out more about Hyaluonic acid, you can read our article, What is Hyaluronic Acid and How To Use It In Natural Skincare?

Remember to always research your ingredients first and check for any contraindications that might mean they are not suitable for you to use. Also, always patch test new ingredients and products and to consult with a skincare professional if you have any concerns or questions about your skincare routine.

8 Skincare Solutions For Dry Skin

Now that you have some knowledge of the causes, characteristics of dry skin and have some of our top ingredient recommendations, what could be some good solutions to combat and alleviate dry skin?

  1. Use a gentle, natural-based cleanser

Instead of harsh cleansers, go for unscented, mild cleansers with natural hydrating and soothing ingredients.

To find out more about natural cleansers, we have two articles for you. You can read our article, The different types of natural (non-foaming) cleansers you can formulate and also our article, Formulating Your Own Cleansers: A Detailed Guide to Effective, Safe, and Sustainable Cleansers For All Skin Types.

  1. Select plant butters or oils

Look for plant butters or oils for extra hydration, while colloidal oatmeal or calendula work well for sensitive, irritated or itchy, dry skin.

  1. Use anhydrous cleansers

Perhaps anhydrous cleansers, like cleansing oils and balms will suit you – those are known for not causing dry skin after use.

  1. Hydrate with humectants

Humectants pull moisture from the surrounding environment into skin cells to keep the skin hydrated. Panthenol, sodium lactate and hyaluronic acid are examples of humectants.

  1. Moisturize with emollients

Apply emollient-rich moisturizers to lock in hydration. Carrier oils and butters are emollient, for example shea butter, avocado oil and hemp seed oil offer emollient qualities.

  1. Protect with an occlusive

Occlusives help to prevent TEWL, or moisture escaping from the skin. Jojoba oil, waxes and butters are effective occlusive ingredients, for example.

  1. Strengthen the skin barrier

An injured skin barrier is often a factor in dry skin so products that help to repair it can be very useful. Fatty acids like linoleic and alpha and gamma linolenic acids are helpful so look for carrier oils high in these. Avoid oleic acid which can damage the lipid barrier. Also ceramides and phytosterols can help to rebuild the protective lipid layer of the skin.

  1. Use sunscreen

It is best to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, to protect from the damaging effects of ultraviolet sunlight.

To get you started and for more information about helping to alleviate dry skin, take a look at our article, Why dry skin needs creams and lotions more than balms and butters: What You Need to Know to Soften and Nourish Dry Skin.

If you are struggling with dry skin, there are a few additional steps you can take to alleviate and combat this condition.

These include:

  1. Avoiding hot showers or baths, as these can strip the skin of its natural oils
  2. Applying a moisturizer immediately after showering or bathing, while the skin is still damp
  3. Using a humidifier to add moisture to the air
  4. Drinking plenty of water to hydrate the skin from the inside out

Why Making Your Own Skincare Products is Better than Buying Products

Making your own skincare products can be a great way to tailor your skincare routine to your specific needs. When you make your own products, you have complete control over the ingredients, allowing you to choose those that are best suited to your skin type.

Additionally, making your own products can be a cost-effective alternative to buying expensive skincare products. Many natural ingredients, such as those mentioned above, can be purchased inexpensively and used in a variety of natural skincare products.

Then it is just about learning the practical skill of making your own natural skincare products and that’s where we come in. Learning to formulate your own products from scratch like a professional, without following other people’s recipes is what students of our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation are able to do and within a few months of enrolling with us, you can too.

First of all, you’ll learn about the importance of weaving your values and beliefs into your formulations and explore the idea of how you will go about doing that – after all, wouldn’t it be amazing to not only make some great products, but go one step further to create products that are totally unique to you?

From there you’ll follow our step-by-step design process to formulate products and select ingredients to achieve the result you or your customers desire. This is where you’ll learn the steps required to take a product from concept through to a final product that is ready for sale.

Then you’ll develop a product concept using a product development brief and a benchmark, write a formula in the correct manner, evaluate your product’s sensory characteristics and submit your product for the appropriate lab tests.

And before we get you formulating, you’ll learn about:

  • Lab skills, equipment and packaging
  • The anatomy & physiology of the skin and how it works (so you can formulate for different skin types, needs and preferences).
  • Natural skincare ingredients and raw materials with your 600+ page ingredient textbook which is the most comprehensive resource available on all the ingredients and raw materials used in natural & organic skincare.
  • Natural preservation and how to preserve your products naturally

Then we’ll get you formulating your own complete range of natural skincare products including these:

  • Oils, butters, balms and salves
  • Spa-style salves, soaks, scrubs and polises
  • Toners, spritzers, mists and gels
  • Creams and Lotions

Before you formulate your creams and lotions, you’ll learn about the science of emulsification, which is much more than just adding an emulsifier!

And to finish off, there are some additional resources to make sure you have the complete natural skincare knowledge you need.

  • Module 14 Cosmetic Regulations and Business Essentials. Comply with cosmetic, labeling and claims regulations.

As we age, our skin goes through various changes that affect its texture, appearance, and health. It’s important to adjust our skincare routine to address these changes and keep our skin looking and feeling its best. In this article, we’ll discuss the causes and characteristics of mature or aging skin, the best natural ingredients to combat it, and skincare solutions to help you look and feel your best.

We’ll focus on the following aspects:

  • What is mature or aging skin?
  • Causes of mature or aging skin
  • The characteristics of mature or aging skin
  • What are the best natural ingredients for mature or aging skin?
  • 8 Skincare solutions for mature or aging skin

What is mature or aging skin?

Mature or aging skin is a term used to describe the changes that occur in our skin as we age. These changes can include a loss of elasticity, dryness, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, and a dull complexion. The aging process is a natural part of life, but certain factors can accelerate it, such as sun exposure, pollution, smoking, and a poor diet.

The science behind skin aging shows that fat is lost below the skin in the face, specifically the cheeks, chin, nose, eye area and temples, which causes the skin to appear wrinkled and loose. Bone and cartilage loss cause the face to appear more skeletal-like and the bony structures may appear more accentuated.

Cumulative sun exposure can trigger melanin production causing uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation and age spots.

How quickly and pronounced this occurs, depends on factors such as:

  • Genetics.
  • Lifestyle and environmental factors, including exposure to UV and pollution.
  • Mechanical aging caused by muscle movements like smiling and frowning.

We’ve written two articles that give you some more information about the skin and how you can take your learning to that next level. Take a look at, Understanding How Your Skin Works and Learning skin anatomy & physiology: the key to formulating for different skin types.

Whilst this article focuses on aging and mature skin, you might be interested in other skin types too? We’ve written about dry skin here, oily and acne prone skin here and sensitive skin here.

Causes of mature or aging Skin

In general, the causes of mature or aging skin can vary, but some of the most common ones include:

Loss of collagen and elastin

Collagen and elastin are proteins that give our skin its structure and elasticity. As we age, our body produces less of these proteins, leading to sagging and wrinkles.

Free radical damage

Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage our skin cells and accelerate the aging process. Exposure to environmental pollutants, UV radiation, and smoking can increase the production of free radicals.

Dryness

As we age, our skin produces less oil, leading to dryness and a dull complexion.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal changes during menopause can cause a decrease in estrogen levels, leading to thinning, dryness, and sagging of the skin.

Genetics

Genetics can also play a role in how our skin ages.

Essentially, skin aging is classified into two categories:

The first is intrinsic aging – the natural or chronological aging of the skin. The second is extrinsic aging which is caused by external physical, environmental and chemical factors such as exposure to UV radiation. According to many sources, extrinsic aging accounts for over 70% of visible signs of aging.

Natural chronological aging contributes to the appearance of the skin through natural loss of subcutaneous tissues and supports, and decline in sebum production. Skin cells take longer to regenerate. Diminished sex hormones lead to dryness, wrinkling, epidermal atrophy, collagen breakdown and loss of elasticity.

Other, more controllable extrinsic factors will also actively contribute and accelerate skin aging and appearance:

  1. UV and environmental exposures:

Sunlight, or ultraviolet radiation (UVR) accelerates skin aging causing premature wrinkles and ‘sun spots’, also referred to as age spots, liver spots or solar lentigo. This process is known as photo-aging.

As skin ages, it thins, loses moisture due to transepidermal water loss, and becomes more dry and dehydrated. This is a normal process, however it may be accelerated or intensified due to UV damage.

Furthermore, exposure to environmental pollutants, synthetic toxins and carcinogens takes a toll on the skin’s health and appearance, as do everyday environmental elements such as wind, cold, rain and snow.

  1. Gravity, facial movement and sleep position can contribute to changes in the skin:

When the skin loses its elasticity, gravity causes drooping and looseness such as around the eyelids and jaw. Facial movement lines also become more visible and lines may appear in areas such as the forehead and around the mouth.

The characteristics of mature or aging skin

As we age, our skin also ages and changes to become more dry, dehydrated and rough feeling; wrinkled, slack and sagging; thin and more transparent; fragile and possibly more sensitive or prone to irritation.

Typically, aging skin is characterized by a number of visible signs and we have several listed here:

Dry skin

A decrease in oil production can cause dryness and a dull complexion.

Rough skin and a dull looking complexion

During the aging process, skin loses its softness, texture and color which makes it appear rough and dull. This happens as the barrier repair function reduces, the skin becomes dry and the skin cells slow down the rate of production.

Fine lines and wrinkles

As we age, our skin becomes less elastic, leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

Age spots

Exposure to UV radiation can lead to the development of age spots, which are flat, brown spots on the skin.

Formulating Natural Skincare Products For Mature or Aging Skin: Causes, Characteristics & Our Top Recommendations Skincare Formulation
Loss of skin firmness

This leads to areas of saggy skin that have lost tightness, elasticity and tone.

Thinning of the skin

As we age, our skin becomes thinner, making it more prone to bruising and tearing.

Hyperpigmentation

As we age, our skin becomes less efficient at repairing damage caused by UV radiation and other environmental factors. This can lead to the accumulation of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color, in certain areas of the skin, resulting in dark spots, age spots, and other forms of hyperpigmentation. Additionally, hormonal changes that occur during menopause can also contribute to the development of hyperpigmentation in women. While hyperpigmentation is a natural part of the aging process, it can also be exacerbated by sun exposure, smoking, and other lifestyle factors.

Fortunately, there are natural ingredients and skincare solutions that can help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and promote more even-toned, radiant-looking skin. So, help is at hand. Let’s take a look.

8 Skincare Solutions for mature or aging Skin

In addition to using natural ingredients in your skincare routine, there are several other skincare solutions that can help improve the health of your mature or aging skin:

  1. Use a gentle cleanser

As we age, our skin becomes more delicate and prone to irritation. Using a gentle, non-foaming cleanser can help remove impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils.

  1. Exfoliate regularly

Exfoliating can help remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover, revealing brighter, more radiant skin. However, it’s important to use a gentle exfoliator and avoid over-exfoliating, which can damage the skin.

  1. Use a serum

Serums are concentrated formulas that can penetrate the skin deeply and deliver potent ingredients. Look for serums that contain antioxidants, hydrating ingredients, and collagen-boosting ingredients.

  1. Moisturize daily

Keeping the skin hydrated is key to maintaining its health and preventing dryness and fine lines. Look for a moisturizer that contains natural, nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, argan oil, or rosehip oil.

  1. Protect your skin from the sun

UV radiation can cause free radical damage and accelerate the aging process. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, even on cloudy days.

  1. Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep is important for maintaining the health of your skin. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

  1. Eat a healthy diet

Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein can provide your skin with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and vibrant. Ensure your diet is rich in antioxidants, and apply antioxidants topically to counter environmental free-radical damage to cells.

  1. Stay hydrated:

Drinking plenty of water can help keep your skin hydrated and improve its overall health.

A final piece of advice to help with this issue is to adopt a simple skincare regime, as early on as possible – which nourishes, hydrates, balances and gently cares for the skin.

It is best to cleanse with a mild cleanser which will not strip the skin’s natural oils and disrupt its delicate balance. Some people find that incorporating regular gentle exfoliation (one to two times per week, at most), keeps skin looking renewed, fresh and glowing.

Employ the use of anti-aging ingredients – some level of reversing skin aging and damage is possible with the help of certain high-performance ingredients. For example, retinoids like tretinoin (Vitamin A), found in rosehip seed oil, minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, boosts elasticity, fades sun damage and slows collagen breakdown in the skin. Antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E or coenzyme Q10 lower the oxidative stress in the skin. This helps to protect the skin from collagen breakdown.

AHAs are used as an anti-aging treatment; they can increase the skin’s elasticity and firmness, stimulate collagen synthesis, and help with hyperpigmentation and sun damage. They can help to brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Licorice extract minimizes melanin production, evens out the skin tone of sun-damaged skin, and reduces the above.

Remember, we can’t reverse the aging process, but we can slow it down and age gracefully 🙂. There are plenty of ways to help and we hope this article is useful.

To get started with this subject, it’s important to understand the role of cleansers in a skincare routine. Cleansers are used to remove dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin, which can accumulate over time and contribute to acne, inflammation, and other skin issues. Cleansers play an important role in preventing breakouts, reducing inflammation, and improving skin texture. By removing excess oil, dirt, and other impurities from the skin, cleansers can help to prevent clogged pores and breakouts.

Regular cleansing can help to improve skin texture by removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover. By keeping the skin clean, clear, and balanced, cleansers help to promote healthy skin and prevent problems from arising.

10 Natural Cleansers You Can Make For Different Skin Types

There are many different types of cleansers that you can make, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Some common types of cleansers include:

  1. Foaming cleansers

These cleansers create a rich lather that helps to remove dirt and oil from the skin. They are often recommended for oily or acne-prone skin, but may be too harsh for those with dry or sensitive skin.

  1. Oil cleansers and Oil-to-milk cleansers

Oil cleansers are designed to dissolve and remove makeup, sunscreen, and other oil-based products from the skin. They can be effective at removing oil and impurities, but may not be suitable for all skin types.

  1. Cleansing balms

Cleansing balms are also similar to cleansing oils, but have a semi-solid consistency. They are usually a blend of oils, butters and wax and can include an emulsifier.

  1. Gel-to-milk cleansers (cleansing gels)

These work in a very similar way to oil-to-milk cleansers and have the same benefits but they are thicker in consistency. When they are dispensed they are gel, but when you add water they turn milky.

  1. Cream cleansers

Cream cleansers are formulated to be gentler and more moisturizing than foaming cleansers. They are often recommended for dry or sensitive skin, but may not be as effective at removing oil and impurities as foaming cleansers.

  1. Cleansing lotions or milks

These work by emulsifying with water to gently remove impurities, makeup, and excess oil from the skin. They are typically formulated with nourishing ingredients such as milk proteins, oils, and plant extracts to help hydrate and soothe the skin while cleansing.

Cream cleansers, cleansing lotions, and cleansing milks are similar types of cleansers that are typically formulated with a creamy texture and are designed to gently cleanse and hydrate the skin, but they may have slightly different ingredients and consistencies depending on the specific product.

  1. Micellar water

Micellar water is a type of cleanser that uses tiny micelles to trap and remove dirt and oil from the skin. It is often recommended for sensitive skin, as it is gentle and non-irritating.

  1. Solid cleansers

Solid cleansers are a type of cleanser that typically come in the form of a balm, bar, or powder that is activated with water. They are designed to effectively remove impurities and makeup while also hydrating and nourishing the skin, and are often formulated with natural oils and butters to help moisturize and soothe the skin.

Formulating Your Own Cleansers: A Detailed Guide to Effective, Safe, and Sustainable Cleansers For All Skin Types Skincare Formulation
  1. Powdered cleansers

Powdered cleansers are a unique type of cleanser that come in a dry powder form and are activated with water to create a foamy or creamy texture. They are designed to gently exfoliate the skin while also removing impurities and excess oil, and can be customized by adjusting the amount of water added to create a more gentle or intense cleansing experience.

  1. Multi-purpose cleansers

Multi-purpose cleansers are a type of cleanser that combine multiple skincare benefits, such as cleansing, exfoliating, and toning, into a single product. They are designed to save time and streamline the skincare routine, but may not be as effective as using the individual products tailored to specific skincare needs.

When choosing a cleanser, it’s important to consider your skin type and any specific concerns you may have. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, a foaming cleanser may be a good option. If you have dry or sensitive skin, a cream cleanser or oil cleanser may be more appropriate. And if you wear makeup or sunscreen, an oil cleanser or micellar water may be necessary to ensure that all products are fully removed from the skin.

It’s also important to note that over-cleansing can be just as damaging to the skin as under-cleansing. Washing your face too often or using harsh cleansers can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to dryness, irritation, and other problems. It’s generally recommended to cleanse the skin once or twice a day, depending on your skin type and lifestyle.

With so much to choose from and to explore, we’d strongly advise that you begin by keeping things simple. First of all, focus on developing some successful cleansers before moving onto the more advanced formulations.

This means learning to formulate your own cleansers in this order:

  1. Oil cleansers and oil-to-milk cleansers
  2. Cleansing balms
  3. Micellar water
  4. Gel-milk cleansers (cleansing gels)
  5. Cleansing lotions or milks
  6. Cream cleansers
  7. Foaming cleansers
  8. Powdered cleansers
  9. Solid cleansers
  10. Multi-purpose cleansers

You’ll learn how to make the first seven of these inside our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation and after you’ve perfected these (and develop excellent skincare formulation skills) you can join the Natural Cosmetic Formulation Club, where you can unlock classes that help you to develop the final three – powdered-, solid- and multi-purpose cleansers!

If you’d like to dive in and find out a little more about some different types of cleansers, we’ve got a few articles for you to read as follows:

The Benefits of Natural & Organic Cleansers

In general, “natural” skincare products are made from ingredients derived from nature, such as plant extracts, essential oils, and minerals. These products may be free from synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and other potentially harmful chemicals. “Organic” skincare products, on the other hand, are made from ingredients that have been grown without the use of pesticides or other synthetic chemicals.

One of the main benefits of using natural and organic cleansers is that they may be less irritating to the skin. Many conventional cleansers contain harsh surfactants and other chemicals that can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, redness, and other issues. Natural and organic cleansers, on the other hand, are often formulated with gentle, plant-based ingredients that are less likely to cause irritation.

In addition to the potential benefits for your skin, natural and organic skincare products are often more sustainable than traditional beauty products. Many natural and organic brands use eco-friendly packaging and ingredients that are sourced from sustainable and ethical suppliers.

7 Excellent Natural and Organic Ingredients To Use In Your Cleansers

When choosing a natural or organic cleanser, it’s important to consider your skin type and concerns which will enable you to select the most suitable ingredients.

For example, if you have oily or acne-prone skin, you may want to look for a cleanser that contains tea tree oil, which has natural antibacterial properties. If you have dry or sensitive skin, you may prefer a cleanser that contains gentle, hydrating ingredients like aloe vera.

There are so many amazing ingredients to choose from that can help to cleanse, hydrate and moisturize your skin, but here are some that you might like to start with:

  1. Aloe vera

A soothing and hydrating ingredient that can help calm irritated skin

  1. Chamomile

An anti-inflammatory ingredient that can help reduce redness and inflammation

  1. Coconut oil

A moisturizing ingredient that can help protect the skin barrier

  1. Green tea

An antioxidant-rich ingredient that can help protect the skin from free radical damage

  1. Jojoba oil:

A lightweight oil that can help balance the skin’s natural oil production

  1. Rosehip oil

A nourishing oil that can help improve skin texture and tone

  1. Salicylic acid

Known for its ability to penetrate deep into pores to exfoliate and clear out excess oil and debris, making it a popular choice for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

Remember to always research your ingredients first and check for any contraindications that might mean they are not suitable for you to use. Also, always patch test new ingredients and products and to consult with a skincare professional if you have any concerns or questions about your skincare routine.

The Rise of Multi-Purpose Cleansers: What are 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 Cleansers, and How Do They Work?

Multi-purpose cleansers, such as 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 products, have become increasingly popular in recent years. These types of cleansers combine different cleansing functions in one product, such as cleansing and exfoliating, or cleansing and toning.

One common type of multi-purpose cleanser is a 2-in-1 cleanser and exfoliator. These products typically contain exfoliating particles or acids that help to slough away dead skin cells, as well as cleansers to remove dirt and oil. While these products can be convenient, it’s important to use them with caution, as over-exfoliating can damage the skin’s protective barrier and lead to irritation and sensitivity. It’s generally recommended to use exfoliating cleansers no more than once or twice a week, depending on your skin type and the intensity of the exfoliation.

Another type of multi-purpose cleanser is a 3-in-1 cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. These products are designed to cleanse the skin, balance its pH, and provide lightweight hydration all in one step. While they can be convenient for those who are short on time or prefer a simplified routine, they may not be as effective as using separate products for each step. Additionally, these products may not be suitable for all skin types, particularly those with very dry or very oily skin.

Overall, multi-purpose cleansers can be a good option for those looking for a simplified skincare routine or who are short on time. However, it’s important to choose a product that is appropriate for your skin type and concerns, and to use it appropriately to avoid over-exfoliating or other issues. As with any skincare product, it’s also a good idea to patch test new products before using them all over your face to avoid potential allergic reactions or irritation.

The trend towards multi-purpose cosmetics has gained traction in recent years, as consumers look for ways to simplify their beauty routines, reduce waste, and use fewer products overall. Multi-purpose cosmetics, including multi-purpose cleansers, are designed to provide multiple benefits in one product, such as cleansing, moisturizing, and providing sun protection all in one step.

One reason for the popularity of multi-purpose cosmetics is the growing awareness of the environmental impact of the beauty industry. Many consumers are looking for ways to reduce waste and minimize their carbon footprint, and using fewer products is one way to do so. Additionally, the trend towards natural and organic beauty has led to an interest in multi-purpose products that contain fewer synthetic ingredients and are more sustainable.

Another reason for the popularity of multi-purpose cosmetics is the desire for a simpler beauty routine. With busy schedules and a growing awareness of the importance of self-care, many consumers are looking for products that can save time and streamline their skincare routine. Multi-purpose cleansers, in particular, can be a convenient way to cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize the skin all in one step.

Overall, the trend towards multi-purpose cosmetics is driven by a desire for simplicity, sustainability, and effectiveness. By choosing products that provide multiple benefits in one step, consumers can reduce waste, save time, and achieve their beauty goals more easily and efficiently.

The Benefits of Multi-Purpose Cleansers

There are several benefits to using multi-purpose cleansers but perhaps the most important ones are as follows:

Convenience

Multi-purpose cleansers can be a time-saver as they eliminate the need for multiple products, allowing for a shorter and simpler skincare routine.

Space-Saving

Multi-purpose cleansers can also be a space-saver, making them an ideal choice for those who have limited storage space or who travel frequently.

Cost-Effective

By eliminating the need for multiple products, multi-purpose cleansers can be cost-effective in the long run.

Versatility

Multi-purpose cleansers can be used for different skin types and concerns, making them a versatile choice for a wide range of people.

The Future of Cleansers in Skincare

As the skincare industry continues to evolve, so too do the products that we use to keep our skin clean and healthy. Here are some of the emerging trends and innovations in cleanser formulation that are shaping the future of skincare:

Advanced formulations

As technology continues to advance, so too do the formulations of cleansers. We are seeing the emergence of products that incorporate cutting-edge ingredients like probiotics, enzymes, and peptides to improve the efficacy of cleansers and provide targeted benefits to the skin.

Sustainability

The beauty industry as a whole is becoming more conscious of its impact on the environment, and cleansers are no exception. In the coming years, we can expect to see an increasing number of brands using eco-friendly packaging and ingredients, as well as investing in sustainable production methods.

Ingredient transparency

Consumers are becoming more aware of the potential risks associated with certain skincare ingredients, and are demanding greater transparency from brands. In response, many companies are beginning to disclose their ingredient lists and sourcing practices more openly, allowing consumers to make more informed decisions about the products they use.

Clean beauty

The clean beauty movement, which emphasizes the use of natural, non-toxic ingredients, is gaining momentum in the skincare industry. As a result, we can expect to see more cleansers that are formulated with plant-based ingredients and free from potentially harmful chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and phthalates.

Personalization

The potential for cleansers to become even more personalized and tailored to individual skin needs is an exciting area of innovation. When you formulate your own natural cosmetic products, you make all the decisions about what the product is and what ingredients are used. This is the ultimate personalization!

New Ingredients

New ingredients are constantly being discovered and tested for their potential benefits in skincare products. For example, some brands are incorporating probiotics and prebiotics into their cleanser formulas to promote healthy skin microbiome. Others are exploring the benefits of unique ingredients like marine algae and superfoods.

Technology

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in improving the efficacy and sustainability of cleansers. For example, some companies are using advanced formulas and manufacturing processes to create products that are more effective at removing impurities from the skin. Others are using sustainable packaging and production methods to reduce their environmental impact.

Overall, the future of cleansers in skincare is looking bright, with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and personalization. As technology continues to advance and our understanding of skincare deepens, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in the world of cleanser formulation in the years to come.

If you’re looking to switch to natural and organic skincare products, creating your own natural or organic cleanser can be a great place to start. As you can see, cleansers are an essential part of a healthy skincare routine. By formulating the right type of cleanser for your skin type and concerns, and using it appropriately, you can help to keep your skin clean, clear, and healthy.

Formulating Your Own Cleansers: A Detailed Guide to Effective, Safe, and Sustainable Cleansers For All Skin Types Skincare Formulation

How To Formulate Your Own Cleansers

When formulating your own cleansers, it’s important to approach the process with care and attention to detail. Enrolling on our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation will teach you everything you need to know to formulate your own natural & organic skincare products from balms, butters, oils, soaks, scrubs, polishes, toners, mists, cleansers, moisturizers, creams and lotions. You can find out more about the course here.

For now, here are some key steps to follow to formulate your own natural & organic cleansers:

Determine the skin type and needs

Before selecting ingredients or developing a formula, it’s important to consider the specific needs of the skin you are formulating for. Is the skin oily, dry, or sensitive? Does it have any particular concerns, such as acne or aging? Understanding the skin type and needs will help you select the right ingredients and create a formula that is effective and well-suited to the skin.

Understand the skin

In addition to considering the skin type and needs, it’s important to have a good understanding of the skin’s physiology and how different ingredients and formulations can affect it. This will help you create a formula that is not only effective but also safe and gentle for the skin.

Select the right ingredients

When selecting ingredients for your cleanser, it’s important to consider their specific benefits and properties, as well as their compatibility with other ingredients in the formula. For example, some ingredients may be too harsh or irritating for sensitive skin, while others may be too heavy for oily skin. It’s also important to consider the concentration and pH of each ingredient, as these factors can affect the efficacy and safety of the formula.

Formulating Your Own Cleansers: A Detailed Guide to Effective, Safe, and Sustainable Cleansers For All Skin Types Skincare Formulation

Develop the formula

Once you have selected the right ingredients, it’s time to develop the formula. This may involve experimenting with different concentrations and ratios of ingredients, as well as adjusting the pH and viscosity of the formula to achieve the desired texture and efficacy. It’s important to document your process and test the formula thoroughly to ensure it is effective and safe for the intended use.

Consider the user experience

It’s important to consider the user experience when formulating your cleanser. This includes factors such as fragrance, texture, and packaging, all of which can influence how the product is perceived and used by the consumer. By creating a formula that is not only effective but also enjoyable to use, you can create a loyal customer base and build a successful skincare brand.

Choose the fast track

By finding the right help from trusted, qualified and experienced professionals in cosmetic science and product formulation, you’ll more easily be able to formulate your own natural skincare cleansers (and other skincare products) to professional standards. You’ll avoid costly mistakes, time consuming (and often, never-ending) trial and error, myths and misconceptions that are rife all over the internet and in books. Many natural beauty enthusiasts dream that one day they will be able to make their own products to sell, and for good reason!

The growth of the natural and organic beauty market is the fastest growing section of the cosmetics industry and many people are turning away from conventional high street beauty brands in search of brands they can identify with, that conform to their values and that sell products that don’t contain harsh or undesirable ingredients.

There is a huge desire among a growing population for truly natural and organic cosmetics. But there is also a problem many people are still finding it hard to find brands who sell products that fit the bill we’ve just described. There is a market for it.

So, that then begs the question.

Why aren’t more natural beauty enthusiasts going for it? Why aren’t they heading off towards the sunset in search of their dream?

There are many reasons, but perhaps the biggest (and least spoken about) reason is down to mindset. With the right mindset, you can achieve anything!

Henry Ford had a very humble start to life and almost no education to write home, but he was hugely successful. He was quoted as saying, “If you think you can, or can’t, you are right”.

So, today we’re looking at creating the mindset of a successful business leader.

How do you create the mindset of a successful business leader?

Let’s take a look.

Be confident in yourself, your business and your products or services

Key to the mindset of a successful business leader is confidence in the product and/or service you are offering.

Now of course it is possible to just ooze confidence no matter how good or bad your products are, but it is a lot better to be genuinely confident about the business and its products/services. If you are happy with your formulations and business ideas, you’ll be more confident in its potential and that will show in your branding, pricing, marketing and communication with the outside world.

In the case of natural beauty products, that means confidence in your formulations!

Everything starts from good product formulation. There is no substitute for a bad product or a substandard solution and in this article we’ll explain why that is the essential foundation of a great business selling natural skincare products.

If you want to start making your own natural skincare products to sell, you need to learn the practice, art and science of natural skincare formulation. We teach our students how to formulate their own complete range of natural skincare products in our accredited, multimedia online Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation.

What’s interesting is that when you come to design your product like a professional, you are actually designing or explaining the foundation of your brand. The two go hand in hand if you do it properly.

So, in our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation, we teach students how to formulate their own products, as if they were doing it for their own brand!

If that is something that interests you, then you’ll definitely want to take a look at the course and for more information on that topic, take a look at our article, The Only Course You Need to Create Your Own Skincare Brand.

6 Success Tips For Natural Beauty Entrepreneurs: Creating the mindset of a successful business leader Beauty Business Advice Skincare Formulation

If you want to make a success of your business, perfect your craft!

There are a lot of cosmetic products on the market and the number of people turning away from creating their own is growing rapidly, so if you want to make your own natural skincare products to sell, you need to make sure you are doing the simple things right.

You need to find a way to learn the key things you need to know in order to ensure that you are doing it right and that your products are the best they can be.

To help you with that, we’ve got:

6 Success Tips For Natural Beauty Entrepreneurs

1. Identify marginal gains

Using the philosophy of Sir Dave Brailsford, if you want to identify and maintain a competitive edge, you have to find marginal gains.

What does that mean for you as a formulator and budding beauty entrepreneur?

To work as a cosmetic scientist or formulator you need to have professional training, up to date knowledge and the practical skill to craft cosmetic products that are safe and stable and that pass cosmetic safety testing.

As a budding beauty entrepreneur, you might not need the same academic credentials or deep level of scientific understanding, but you definitely need to acquire the same level of cosmetic formulation proficiency and practical skill.

In addition to that, if other people are out there making and selling their own natural skincare products already, you need to do whatever you can to hone your skills, perfect your craft, build your knowledge and cultivate your expertise of natural skincare formulation. They are out there doing it, which means you should, too.

If you are not doing this or are not willing to put in the time and effort to do it, you run the risk of making the job significantly harder than it needs to be.

We advise all of our students to spend time and put effort into upskilling and learning the professional craft of natural skincare formulation.

6 Success Tips For Natural Beauty Entrepreneurs: Creating the mindset of a successful business leader Beauty Business Advice Skincare Formulation

2. Find the difference that makes the difference

Tony Robbins tlks a lot about growth and success and one of his most famous philosophies is “find the difference that makes the difference”.

This literally means you have to do whatever you can to find simple things, small changes, a few different things that, no matter how small, actually make a huge difference.

Often these differences are small but significant and right in front of our noses.

How might this apply to you as a formulator and budding beauty entrepreneur?

To become a successful beauty entrepreneur, making and selling your own natural skincare products, you have to

  • Perfect the art of making those products
  • Package and label your products, not just according to cosmetic regulations but also with the image and branding you want your business to represent and that warrants the price you are selling your products for.
  • Price them in a way that means they are both attractive for your customers and a match for your brand image. You’ll need to make sure you can make a profit too!
  • Your brand image – design, logo, colors, font, strapline, values and mission – are all important facets of your brand. Your products should share the same messages and indeed convey those messages.
  • Marketing and selling your products is also key…obviously.

You might look at this with a certain sort of dread with how much you need to know but really you shouldn’t. It’s a bit like learning to formulate your own products! It takes time. Some things you are good at and some things you aren’t but you learn to do your best and often that’s enough.

If you can find the difference that makes the difference to your dreams, goals and ambitions (as well as business growth), then you are on the right track.

The fast track to doing this is to upskill!

Find experts to teach you and accurate instruction to follow. Seek qualified and respected industry sources who can teach you the right way to formulate your products.

3. Different is better than the best

In addition to Tony Robbins, there is the idea that well known business mentor Tara Gentile expresses where “Different is better than best”.

Put simply, this means that you don’t have to strive to be the best but instead you should strive to be different and by default you will more likely be seen by others as the best.

What we’re saying here is to differentiate yourself from many homecrafters and DIY beauty enthusiasts who are following the wrong advice, incorrect information and falling for the same myths and misconceptions.

Differentiate yourself from the crowd of people who are not using tried, tested and scientifically proven methods to make their beauty products.

Bring your DIY, artisan, homecrafter spirit, your enthusiasm and passion for natural beauty and match that with the professional methods that work and give you the results you seek.

If you are not making products the right way, following the correct guidelines, industry standards and abiding by cosmetic regulations, then you will find your task of making products to sell much more challenging than it needs to be.

You need to find a way to learn the essential things you need to do in order to take your brand and range of products to market.

Find the little differences that make the difference, strive to be different and look for marginal gains.

4. Keep it simple

Advice for any budding skincare formulator and beauty entrepreneur is to keep things simple and build from there!

Most passionate beauty enthusiasts love playing with and exploring new ingredients and they love to experiment with lots of different product types. They also love tweaking their formulas.

The practical aspect of this hobby is what gets everyone excited! It is the thing we love to do.

But if you want to bring a range of products to market, we encourage you to take the philosophy of keeping it simple. Rome wasn’t built in a day!

We see lots of beauty entrepreneurs get excited about their creations (rightly so!) and go to market with a huge range of glamorous sounding products. They want to appeal to everyone and they want a range of products to match that includes balms, butters, oils, serums, scrubs, toners, cleansers, masks, lotions and creams all with different ingredients and exotic sounding themes.

This is hugely exciting but also very expensive, hard to manage, complicated to manufacture and challenging to market… not to mention that your entire investment is spread across lots of products and that will significantly limit the impact you can have.

However, if you put all of your investment into a small ‘capsule range’ of the best crafted and most loved products that bring about a high profit margin, you are setting yourself up for success.

Also, with a small capsule range of, for example, three products, all of your marketing is focused with simple, clear and consistent messages.

Start small, niche and unique, expand brand awareness and market exposure and go from there.

5. Think about the most important elements of your brand

Once you’ve perfected the practice, art and science of natural skincare formulation and you’ve started to finalize your capsule range, you’ll already have a lot of the information you need to design your brand.

You’ll have defined your values and beliefs and you will have infused your products with that essence. You’ll already have much of the core ideas you need for your brand, your products and you (or your brand’s) reason for being. You’ll also know your target market and your ideal customer.

Now it is about defining your brand vision and mission, your brand purpose. Now it is about spending time designing the ethos, vision, mission, values and beliefs of your brand.

What will your brand do, why does it exist, what problems does it solve, who will love to be associated with your brand and why?

What else will your brand do to inspire, lead and make a difference to the world and the people who take part?

Students of our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation learn all of this as they study the course and they then go on to apply their findings when it comes to formulating their products (in the later modules) and launching their brands.

You can take some inspiration from some brands created by students of our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation. Such as Merkaba Skincare, Indagare Beauty, Masters Natural Skincare, and Coco Salvaje.

6. Bring your brand to life with professional looking branding

This is where you need to recruit the right people to help you. This is where a professional photographer and a graphic designer come in.

Don’t be put off by this and don’t be afraid to take this leap of faith. If you want to make your brand work and you want your products to sell, they need to look and sound just as good as the love, care, attention you’ve put into creating them.

Don’t waste money on bad graphics and amateur photos.

Make an investment into properly presented and taken photos by hiring a photographer. This doesn’t need to cost the earth. It would be good to shop around and see who is out there, how much they cost and whether you could work with them.

Make an investment by finding and working with a good graphic designer they will make your brand stand out and they are trained at being able to translate your vision, mission and values into something visually appealing… so your audience buys into it.

You could also work with a web designer they don’t have to be expensive either to help you design a proper, professional and ‘on-brand’ website.

The look and feel of your brand is just as important as your products and no matter what is inside the package… if it doesn’t look good or represent a visual match to the values you believe, less people will be inclined to buy into it.

These three things graphic design, photography and web design don’t have to cost the earth… but if you have designed your products like a professional, you will have the basis for all of the core elements of your brand and you can then go to these people to help you to create the visual representation of your brand.

If working with these types of professionals is a stretch too far for you right now… even more reason to get your formulating skills, ingredient knowledge, skin biology, vision, mission, values and beliefs sorted. Even more reason to perfect the art of safe, stable and effective product formulation. Even more reason to ensure you know exactly what you are doing, what’s right and wrong…

So where do you start?

With perfecting the practice, art and science of natural skincare formulation!

This will ensure you become professional in your art and it will help you to make sure your products are unique, authentic, safe, stable and effective. This will also give you all of the core ideas, inspirations and information you need to create the foundation and essence of your brand.

Our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation gives you the platform to do this and you’ll learn about:

  • How to infuse your products with your personal meaning and values.
  • How to design products customers love.
  • How to write professional cosmetic formulas.
  • A wide range of raw cosmetic ingredients, their properties, uses, benefits, characteristics and safety data as well as recommended usage rates.
  • Lab skills, equipment and packaging.
  • The science of emulsification and preservation.
  • Cosmetic regulations.
  • How to formulate a complete range of natural skincare products.

This is a complete tuition that gives you the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to create a range of products that are unique, the best they can be, professionally crafted and authentic.

By taking this instruction, you will be following the correct methods to create products that you know are safe, stable and effective.

Don’t make it up. Keep the DIY essence, belief and purpose, but match it with professional standards.

Don’t fall for the same misconceptions and myths that are all over the internet. Don’t rely on out of date books.

Don’t rely on people you don’t know who aren’t qualified to offer advice. Don’t rely on well meaning but inaccurate information from other passionate but misinformed people.

Instead, put your investment in the right place, get proper, up to date instruction and learn from a team of experts.

When it comes to formulating your own natural skincare products, whether for yourself, family and friends, or to sell, there are a few things that can really help you to make sure your products are the very best they can be.

One of those things is having good knowledge of natural and organic ingredients, and access to reliable and up-to-date ingredient information. The better you know your ingredients, the easier it will be to create your own products.

But with so many ingredients to choose from, it can be hard to retain all that information. Also, with so much incorrect and inaccurate information being shared around online, books that go out of date very quickly and new ingredients being discovered on a regular basis, it can be hard to keep up.

Finding and having access to a reliable, accurate and, more importantly, up-to-date guide is what every natural skincare formulator and budding natural beauty entrepreneur needs and wants but it is very difficult to find.

That’s why we put together The Complete Guide to Natural Skincare Ingredients and Raw Materials! This 600+ page textbook can be found inside our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation and is what students and graduates use to formulate their own professional quality natural and organic skincare products.

Often you find books that cover one area, such as carrier oils or essential oils, but our Complete Guide covers the entire spectrum.

You’ll find lipids, carrier oils, esters, waxes, butters, essential oils, hydrosols and fragrances, thickeners, stabilizers, solubilizers, thickeners, emulsifiers, preservatives, antioxidants, humectants, clays, powders, sals and exfoliants, vitamins, botanical extracts, hydrosols, pH adjusters and so much more!

You’d be hard pushed to find anything that compares to this anywhere and students and graduates use it as a reference guide for years after completing their studies. It is one of the things students of the Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation love the most.

And what can be more handy to a formulator than a library of information about natural cosmetic ingredients and raw materials?

The Complete Guide to Natural Skincare Ingredients and Raw Materials! Natural Skincare Ingredients Skincare Formulation Studying

  • A detailed profile for each ingredient that also includes the usage guidelines (percentages and in what phase of a formula to use each) which is somewhat difficult to find.
  • A number of scientific papers for further research.

This is a complete reference guide to natural skincare ingredients and raw materials.

When you enroll onto our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation, you’ll find this guide in Module 5: Cosmetic Ingredients and Raw Materials.

One of the most important areas of knowledge for a formulator of natural and organic skincare is skin anatomy and physiology.

It is not enough to simply create a skincare product with a hunch that it will work on certain skin types and skin concerns.

Textbooks on this subject are not designed to be fun and exciting, scientific papers are hard to understand for non-scientists and videos are not easy to find. So it is little wonder that this is one topic that students put off learning about.

How good is your skin anatomy and physiology?

If you intend to design and create your own natural skincare products, either for yourself or to sell, you have to develop a good understanding of the skin.

Even with excellent knowledge of ingredients, the best equipment, and top notch suppliers, if you don’t have a good understanding of the skin, you’re essentially formulating with one hand tied behind your back.

You need to be able to deliberately select ingredients for specific skin types or particular skin concerns. And you need the knowledge to enable you to do that.

That’s exactly why we’ve dedicated an entire module to this very topic inside our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation Module 4 Skin Anatomy and Physiology: Formulation for Different Skin Types.

This is an informative module that gives you the essential knowledge needed in order to formulate like a pro. It is written in a clear and informative way that isn’t confusing or as hard to read as many textbooks on this subject.

Learning skin anatomy & physiology: the key to formulating for different skin types Getting started Skincare Formulation Studying

In addition to that, we’re committed to being inclusive to people from all cultural origins which means ensuring our courses cater to all skin tones.

For that reason we asked Dija Ayodele, a leading esthetician and founder of Black Skin Directory to provide specialist training to our team to help us ensure that skin of color is represented in our course materials.

Formulating for Different Skin Types; what’s included?

The Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation’s Module 4 Skin Anatomy and Physiology: Formulating for Different Skin Types is where you’ll gain knowledge of:

  1. How the skin functions.
  2. The physiological changes that occur as the skin ages.
  3. Common characteristics of different skin types, tones and concerns.
  4. Considerations when formulating products suited for oily, sensitive, dry, combination and aging skin.
  5. How to address concerns such as hyperpigmentation.

What is more, you can download this module, save it to your own files and refer to it as often as you like for years to come.

Below is a breakdown of what’s included in this module, but you can also see the same information on the course page on our website, or in the prospectus.

Learning skin anatomy & physiology: the key to formulating for different skin types Getting started Skincare Formulation Studying

A breakdown of skin anatomy and physiology

What’s included with Module 4 – Skin Anatomy and Physiology: Formulating for Different Skin Types

As we said above, this is where you’ll:

  1. Apply knowledge of how the skin functions
  2. Discover the physiological changes that occur as the skin ages
  3. Understand the common characteristics of different skin types, tones and concerns

So you can formulate products suited for oily, sensitive, dry, combination and aging skin and to address concerns such as hyperpigmentation.

Learn the seven main functions of the skin, then we take you layer-by-layer through the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous layer learning about the main responsibilities of each. We explore the epidermis in detail, following the production of skin cells from creation to shedding away.

4.2 Skin barrier

A disrupted skin barrier can cause dry patches and flakiness, plus the skin can feel sensitive or inflamed. Discover the significance of the skin barrier and how to keep it in optimum condition.

4.3 Moisturizing the skin: water, humectants, emollients and occlusives

Learn how to effectively moisturize the skin, and the benefits and limitations of anhydrous products and emulsions.

4.4 The acid mantle

An important role of the acid mantle is to maintain the skin’s pH balance, which helps maintain skin suppleness, smoothness and strength. Discover factors affecting the acid mantle pH, possible characteristics of disrupted acid mantle pH and how to protect and restore the acid mantle.

4.5 Skin aging

Understand in detail how the skin ages, the physiological changes, visible signs of skin aging and how skincare products can improve the appearance of aging skin.

4.6 Formulating for different skin types and concerns

We take a close look at different skin types (including mature, oily/acne prone, dry, sensitive and normal), the characteristics of these skin types and which ingredients are beneficial. We provide you with a guide for each skin type, which will be invaluable when you start formulating!

We also explore the role of cosmetics and drugs in the treatment of skin conditions including acne, eczema/dermatitis, hyperpigmentation, psoriasis and rosacea.

4.7 Formulating for the eye contour and lips

We share the factors to consider when formulating for the eye contour, how the skin on our lips is different to the skin on our face and what lips need to stay in optimum condition.

4.8 A skincare routine

A skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated but it is the key to radiant skin! Follow our simple facial and body care routines and learn about occasional skincare treatments.

Taking the next step

If you’d like to find out more about the skin, you’ll want to read our article, Understanding How Skin Works

How the Diploma will help you to become a professional natural skincare formulator

Every module of the Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation is designed and crafted to enable you to learn every part of designing and creating your own skincare products.

Let’s take a look.

Module 1 – Your Values, Brand and Creating Unique ProductsThe Only Course You Need to Create Your Own Skincare Brand Beauty Business Advice Skincare Formulation Studying

If you want to make products for yourself, exploring your needs, preferences and concerns is essential if you want to make perfectly tailored products.

And if you want to start selling your products, rather than making a product and hoping someone will buy it, you need to go through a process of identifying who your ideal customer might be and what your target audience could be.

If you want to create a unique brand with meaning and value to you, a strong purpose and reason for being, you have to go through a process to define all of that when designing your own unique products, you would do the same thing!

That way you can more easily and deliberately infuse your products (and your brand) with the things that mean the most to you.

This also helps to make sure your products are the very best they can be.

Module 2 – Skincare Product Design Process and

Module 3 – Creating Professional Cosmetic Formulations

The process you go through to design your own products is similar to the process you’d go through when creating your own brand.

If you want to create professional quality products, you have to use and follow professional methods, whether you want to create them for yourself or to sell.

These two modules in particular will help you to become professional in your approach.

The Only Course You Need to Create Your Own Skincare Brand Beauty Business Advice Skincare Formulation Studying

Module 4 – Skin Anatomy and Physiology: Formulating for Different Skin Types and

Module 5 – Cosmetic Ingredients and Raw Materials

If you want to be able to deliberately select ingredients to suit specific needs, concerns and preferences, you need to know:

  • About a wide range of natural and organic skincare ingredients; their properties, benefits and uses as well as recommended usage rates.
  • The structure and function of the skin, characteristics of different skin types and skin concerns.
  • The different types of products you can make as well as their individual uses, benefits and features.

Modules 4 and 5 cover these topics in great depth.

To find out more about Module 4, we wrote an article all about it. It is called Learning skin anatomy & physiology: the key to formulating for different skin types and you can find it here.

Module 5 is a 600+ page textbook that covers the whole spectrum and a diverse range of ingredients and raw materials used in natural and organic cosmetics. You simply can’t get a textbook as comprehensive or all encompassing as this. Graduates continue to use this textbook as a resource for many years after completing their studies.

You can find out more about this in an article we wrote on that subject called The Complete Guide to Natural Skincare Ingredients and Raw Materials!

The Only Course You Need to Create Your Own Skincare Brand Beauty Business Advice Skincare Formulation Studying

Module 6 – Lab Skills, Equipment and Packaging

Whether you want to make products for yourself or to sell, if you want to cultivate the art, skill and science of proper product formulation, you’ll need to make sure you:

  • Have the right equipment that also helps you to scale up properly when you need or want to.
  • Follow good manufacturing practice bad practices lead to bad results, unstable and unsafe products as well as lots of wasted time and money.
  • Use proper lab techniques and skills that mean you can easily weigh, heat, calibrate, sanitize, mix, homogenize, fill and calibrate.
  • Know about the required pH of your products as well as test and adjust the pH.
  • Calculate batch sizes correctly, especially when you scale up or down.
  • Identify and use the right packaging for the right product.

You’ll learn about and be able to apply all of this in Module 6.

Module 7 – Preserving Skincare Products Naturally and

Module 12 – The Science of Emulsification

If you are going to make products for yourself or to sell, you need to make sure they are safe, stable and effective; you have to get the basics right.

Science outweighs all rhetoric on this subject, otherwise you seriously risk making products that are not safe for use and that can actually cause more harm than you realize.

Making safe and stable products is also not just about adding a preservative or an emulsifier. You may need to use multiple ingredients and follow a structured system for both preservation and emulsification.

For an introduction to creating a broad-spectrum preservative system, check out our article, ‘Creating a Broad-spectrum Preservative System for Natural Skincare Products’ here.

Of course, this article is very much an introduction to this topic. We teach you everything you need to know about creating stable emulsions using the science of emulsification and creating your own broad-spectrum preservative system – that works! – in these two modules and ensure it’s explained in a way that is easy to understand. Plus, you’ll find a range of natural preservatives and emulsifiers from which to choose..

Module 8 – Formulating Oils, Oil-based Serums and Self-emulsifying Oils,

Module 9 – Formulating Butters and Balms,

Module 10 – Formulating Spa-style Soaks, Scrubs and Polishes,

Module 11 – Formulating Toners, Spritzers, Mists and Gels, and

Module 13 – Formulating Creams and Lotions

These are the practical formulation modules where you’ll apply your knowledge to actually formulate your own complete range of natural and organic skincare products. This is where you’ll get hands on and make your own products, whether for yourself or to sell.

What students love about these modules is not just creating and perfecting their own formulations, but using the example formulations we’ve created for you in our in-house cosmetics lab. These example formulations will help you to develop your practical product making skills and give you a little bit of inspiration to what’s possible.

In addition to that, inside each module you’ll find formulation templates for each product type with guidelines about recommended usage rates for each ingredient type. These usage rates follow industry standards and guidelines, so you know you are formulating to the highest possible standards for each individual product you make. Graduates use these templates after their studies and in their businesses.
